Google Adwords - Getting the most out of your free trial.

If you are a new Google Adwords advertiser, you are eligible to receive a promotional coupon worth $250!

That's a lot of advertising dollars. (If you already have an Adwords account, you can take advantage of the offer by just signing up again by making a new account and using a different credit card than you originally used)

But how do you get the best value out of your free advertising money?

Here are a few ideas on how to advertise on Google Adwords so you don't burn through your cash unnecessarily.

  1. Target an audience that is willing to buy - You need to write your ad content so that it attracts clicks from people that are on the verge on buying what you are selling, as opposed to people who are just looking for information.
  2. Use the correct keywords - You don't always want to use the most popular keyword search terms because those will be the most expensive. Use the Adwords Keyword Tool to help you find more specific keyword phrases that will cost you less.
  3. Use exact match for keywords - Although your ad will be shown less often, you will have much more control over the display of your ad if you use the exact match feature on your keywords.
  4. Use different ad copy - Make many different ads with different ad copy and then track the results to see which ones convert better.
  5. Make different landing pages - What you pay for your ad depends on many factors including the keywords in your ad and also the keywords in your landing page. The better these match up, the lower your rate will be for that ad.
  6. Include a price for your product or service in your ad - By including the price of the item you are advertising in your ad copy you are saving money because those who might have clicked your ad but didn't because of the price would not have bought your item after visiting your landing page anyway.
  7. Don't try to be number 1 - The price difference that you will be paying between the first ad slot position and the last may be significant. Since you do not know the conversion rate on the new ads that you have just created, don't bid the ad to be in the first slot. Save money by bidding the ad in the lower slot until you get enough information about conversion rates. Once you know an ad converts well, then you can pay more to get it into a higher position.
  8. Bid the minimum then go see - Put in the lowest bid for your ad, then type in your specific keywords into the Google search engine to see where it falls on the ad position list. If you want to bump your ad up, then do so incrementally by upping your bid. that way you never pay more than necessary.
  9. Sometimes the bottom is best - It's true, your ad stands out more when it is on the bottom of the list than in the middle of the ad position list.

Of course some of these points can be greatly expanded upon, but in general if you are mindful of the information above you will be able to stretch the free money that Google has given you to sign up with Adwords.
