Biggest Mistake Concerning the Marketing Plan
The biggest mistake anyone can make concerning their marketing plan is not that they didn't get enough data.
The marketing plan that you write is only good if you use it. There is no point in writing a large detailed plan that is so complex that you never refer to it once it has been written!
The marketing plan is a living document. It needs to be updated with the results of your marketing efforts on a consistent basis.
Once you have your plan written out, there will be sections that may or may not have to be refined again. For example, your target market(s) may change over time as your business grows. If that is so, then this should be written in and new marketing efforts devised to reach those new potential clients.
However, your target audience may not change over time, but your marketing efforts certainly will.
When you start out your business, you should have a few marketing ideas written into your plan. This will guide you as to where to spend your limited advertising resources. But the mistake most people make while following the plan is to not update it!
If you spend money on an advertising campaign of any sort, the results, the ROI should be measured as best as possible. All the results should be added to your marketing plan. To not do so would be foolish. How else will you know in the future if one sort of advertising effort works better than another? If you make little tweaks to your ad the next time it gets published, you would want to know which worked best?
Over time, you will be able to go back through the years of your marketing plan efforts and easily determine where to spend your resources on advertising.
So by far the biggest mistake that people make concerning their marketing plan is that they do not update their plan with the results of their marketing efforts.
