How to Sell Products that Many Others Already Sell

Stand Out Marketing

This is a common marketing question, and the details of the answer will be specific to categories of products. However the basic answer is that you need to increase the perceived value of the product.

Distinguish your products in a way that either makes them seem different enough so that you enhance the product in some way, and at the same time making it difficult for a consumer to be able to easily do a price comparison.

The main problem when selling products that many others sell is that a potential buyer will easily be able to locate different stores selling the item. This is made much easier with comparison shopping websites. If you are not selling the product the at the lowest price, then more than likely you will not get the sale.

So one main way to distinguish your product is to remove the ability of the buyer to comparison price easily. You do this by combining the product with additional products. In this way, you are creating a unique bundle of products that although your price will be higher, you are also providing added value.

So for example, if you are selling the same widget that everyone seems to be selliing, you need to create a widget bundle by including a widget training video, an extended warrenty of some kind, protective gear when using the widget, etc.

Alhough your price will be higher than with the single item, the perceived value to the customer of the bundled package will also be higher. That way you are not involving yourself in a price war with the lowest price out there in the market place.

If this is difficult to do with your product, then you must convince the potential customer in other ways that your store is the best place to buy from, such as having alot of good feedback. If people trust your store, then they will be willing to pay an extra few dollars for the peace of mind.

Lastly, perhaps offering free shipping, fast shipping options, free return shipping, or any other options that may not be directly connected to the item itself, but that may be valuable to the customer in other ways.

So, in summary, when trying to sell a product that many others sell, you need to distinguish yourself from the competition by increasing the perceived value of the product (or product bundle), by increasing the trust in your store, or by offering options that make the sale convienient to the customer.
